Dons & Doffs

Upon hearing “dons” or “doffs” in some occasions, their actions could be described by two phrases “do on” meaning “to do”. In the Middle English, “doffen” became “don off” meaning “to do off”. When you are going to say “Thank you, excuse me, hello or goodbye” to anyone, no matter male or female, slightly lift the hat off your head. In tradition, tipping of hats is regarded as a gesture of politeness. Such etiquette is similar to that of military saluting, medieval knights will raise face visors to unleash a friendly attitude. Regardless of reducing times of hat wearing, all adults rocked hats when they went out during the transitional period between the 20th century and the 21st century. It’s also a matter involving personal hygiene, because hats could keep your head away from dirt.

In general, hats should be removed for the National Anthem, national flag, as well as in some special cases like Christian churches, outdoor weddings, dedications or photographs. Then hold hat in hand and keep the outside out. Turing to worship places, men should take off hats all the time in Christian churches; on the contrary, it’s necessary to cover heads in Muslim mosques, no matter men and women. When entering into Jewish synagogues, men need cover their heads and married women combines hats or scarves to show modesty towards men rather than their husbands.

“Kippah” refers to men’s head covering or skullcap, and it also means “dome” or “cupola”. “Yarmulke” is the name of cap in the Yiddish. Wearing a Yarmulke reminds them to be humble before God and be respectful in a congregation. In addition, it’s also a symbol of recognition of grateful matters. This is also the reason why almost every Jews male will top a head covering when they are awake. Certainly, there are some exceptions like bathing or swimming. After long-term evolution, at present, wearing hats in Christian churches for women is acceptable; such requirements having been required, but now they have disappeared.

For ordinary people, hats are often removed when you stay in inside like akin-to-street lobbies, corridors or crowded elevators. One public building featuring no apartments is a public area, so such an elevator is also taken as a public area by and large. Perhaps one will choose to remove your hat in a public lift; in a lady’s presence, hat removing is a necessary gesture to show politeness. Hat removing is also necessary in a lift. One public corridor is just like a street; however, an elevator in a hotel is just similar to a room in a house. So, a gentleman should remove hat in the presence of ladies.

Removing them risks messing up their hairstyles. Above hat etiquette involving gentlemen also applies to other hats like fedoras, panama hats, as well as casual hats like a bucket hat. Why hat etiquettes for men and women are different? The most important reason may lie in intricate and complicated decorations on women’s hats. From time to time, women’s hats may be anchored by hat pins.

A Hat Designer—Rachel Trevor-Morgan

Rachel Trevor-Morgan, a British hat designer, is best known for the hats she creates for the Queen. She has been thriving in London doing what she loves best—designing beautiful headwear since 1990. In 2014, she was granted a Royal Warrant to design hats for Her Majesty The Queen. Her hats can be seen at the Royal Ascot and other elegant events.

Rachel Trevor-Morgan was born in Stourbridge, West Midlands. When she was a child, Rachel loved seeing her mother wear hats to church. At the age of 19, she moved to London in order to learn how to be a milliner. Rachel learned from two of London’s most celebrated milliners including Graham Smith who taught her how to get the hat right and Philip Somerville who taught her about “people relations”. She regards Smith as her “mentor” because he can give her good advice when she needs.

On a normal day in 2006, Rachel, who was busy in the studio, received a call. It was Angelina Kelly, the Queen’s clothing assistant. “She said her name on the phone which made me shocked.” Rachel said. What she did not expect was that Kelly came to her studio just a few minutes later, because after Frederick Fox retired, the Queen needed urgently a new designer. Before that, she only met Kelly once. Maybe it was because of a recommendation of a designer who worked with Rachel that Rachel was able to catch Kelly’s attention.

“She looked seriously in my showroom and talked to me. Then she asked me if I was interested in making hats for the Queen. Of course I was.” In the following days, Rachel painted six designs and sent them to the palace. These design drawings were personally checked by the Queen. Since then, His Majesty Queen became the most important guest of Rachel’s career. and brought her the honor of the guests.

She was not told in advance that the Queen would wear the hat she was asked to design to attend her 80th birthday celebration. “But because this occasion was my first stage to show my design, I though it must be very important. Even if you didn’t believe it would happen until you saw your hat on TV that was worn by the Queen walking out of the car.”

Rachel also entered into Buckingham Palace and waited for the Queen when she was trying on the hat she designed. Rachel’s first meet with the Queen was different with her predecessor, Frederick Fox. No one told her various requirements. In addition to being a bit nervous, she remembered that the Queen was easy-going and it was a very happy and low-key conversation.

Like all her guests, comfort is also the most important for the Queen. She said:“The hat can’t be too heavy because she’s going to stay outside for a long time. She can’t always care about her hat. She wants to focus on what she’s doing…”

Although the Queen is 92 years old, the old lady is still fashionable. Girls who want to be fashionable too can learn from the stylish lady. I will recommend you a beret hat  which is suitable for everyone. You can have a try.

Hat Culture in Britain

There is a special culture of hats in Britain. The British, men and women, old men and kids, are obsessed with hats. They even do not hesitate to spend a few thousand pounds to buy a hat, which expressed absolutely their love for hats. Moreover, their hats are mostly stunning, colorful and bold, and what the hats mean is beyond the understanding of normal people.

Hats are particularly important for ladies in the UK. When attending formal occasions, they may quickly pick a dress, but it is so hard to choose a suitable hat, because for them, the hat is not only a decoration, but also a symbol of status. A satisfactory hat will make them gorgeous and confident. We can say that hats have been a special accessory for British ladies to show their beauty and fashion sense.

Although the hats designed for the British women are varied, the hats for men are similar. The most typical male hat is the bowler that is a hard felt hat with a rounded crown. The hat is usually black, dark gray and blue-black. The middle and upper classes in the United Kingdom had to wear it.

When it comes to the most pretty celebrities with hats in the eyes of the British, people will talk about Elizabeth II, Sophie Helen Rhys-Jones, Victoria Beckham and Madonna.

Queen Elizabeth II

It is said that the Queen have worn totally 5,000 different hats over the past 50 years. The designers include Philip Somerville, Frederick Fox and Rachel Trevor-Morgan.

When she was at the Westminster Abbey, the Queen wore a pink hat.

When she met the citizens in Kent, a country in southeastern England, the Queen wore a pink beret.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex, GCVO, is the wife of Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex who is the youngest son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Now she assists her husband in his various activities.

She wore a chapeau in an understated color that complimented her elegant coat to the royal wedding. The abundance of feathers and silk roses ensures her headwear became eye-catching.

Victoria Beckham

She is the wife of the football legendary David Beckham and currently has her own brand. In November 2011, she won Designer Brand of the Year at the British Fashion Awards. By 2011, her brand had grown into a fixture of New York Fashion Week.

She and her husband were invited to attend the royal wedding twice, and she wore navy blue dress paired with a hat.

She has been regarded as the “Queen of Pop” since the 1980s. Madonna is the wealthiest woman in the music business, and has sold more than 300 million records worldwide. On the other hand, her fashion sense is also praised by people.

Look at Hat Culture from Royal Ascot

Founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, Royal Ascot is referred to a British racecourse, located in Ascot, Berkshire, England, which is used for thoroughbred horse racing. Royal Ascot is a major event in the British social calendar and it is held annually. Elizabeth II and other members of the British Royal Family such as The Prince of Wales attend the Royal Ascot every year. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge also attend, as well as the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Press coverage of the attendees and what royal members are wearing often exceeds coverage of the actual racing. The event also attracts approximately 300,000 people from the UK and around the world each year. The Queen’s horse also competes in the event and it won the 23rd victory in 2016. There is no doubt that is the horse racing is accompanied by betting on horse racing and the two never seem to separate. Therefore, the Royal Ascot is also a betting horse festival, and even the Queen will be a gambler. It is said that the Queen will wear in blue for good luck because blue is her lucky color.

However, watching the horse racing and betting on one horse are not what most people care about. Some people who are not interested in the horse racing are more concerned about the major fashion event, because the clothes worn by members of the Royal Family will be bold and eye-catching. The Royal Ascot is a royal traditional event that strictly asks members who attend the event to wear classy. Accordingly, most of the audience are dressed gracefully and elegantly, especially the royal family members and other gentlemen and ladies. The gentlemen have to wear a suit and the length of ladies’ dress has to reach knees from 2012. Bare shoulders are not allowed.

Royal Ascot reach its climax on the third day because it is not only the day for the “Golden Cup” but also the “Ladies Day” that is renowned as the biggest day on the British social and sporting calendar. All ladies will wear the most stunning and bold hats this day. In Britain, the role of hats goes far beyond protection from the sun and warmth. It is also a fashion accessory which is suitable for many occasions. In addition, it is a symbol of religious beliefs and social status. It is precisely for this reason that the historic horse racing has become a “hat event”.

There are some photos about ladies’ hats in the 2017 Royal Ascot. Princess Anne chose green for Ladies Day. A pink hat and coat made the Queen Elizabeth look resplendent. Jessica Hart carried a Bertoni 1949 Black Soft Calf Regular Bertoncina Bag and wore a black hat, which looked elegant. Laura Whitmore, an Irish television presenter and model based in London, wore a floral lace midi dress from Karen Millen and wore a floral hat. Milliner Ilda Di Vico, dressed in blue.
